I couldn't help but be reminded of this article about crows, so intelligent:

And also Eugene Levy's new documentary series, The Reluctant Traveller. At age 75, he's finally going outside his comfort zone, and doing so humorously of course. The first episode is in Finland, lots of ice fishing, ice plunges, etc:

I’m really fascinated by orvids. Crows, Jackdaws etc. I love the Swedish crowd picking up rubbish! There’s also a little boy I read about who’s been sharing his food with crows and they bring him gifts for it. Sometimes the gifts are a bit gross - animal parts for example - but also bits of shiny metal, hair clips, plastic toys.

And my sister also told me about the Eugene Levy episode. I’ll have to check it out!

Another bird in the corvid family is the magpie, so common in the western U.S.

Once years ago we were camped in a national park in Colorado. We noticed two magpies flying in and out of the next campsite one afternoon. Turns out the people camped there, who were gone for the day, had left a bag of dry dog food out on the picnic table. All afternoon those magpies ferried dog food away from the campsite, one piece at a time. So opportunistic and diligent.

I Love magpies! The Australian ones have the best warble! https://youtu.be/oYEYc8Ge3nw

They have magpies here but they’re different to the Aussie ones. I guess colonisers saw black and white birds everywhere they went and named them magpies. I haven’t checked to see if they’re actually genetically related 🤔 I’m currently 10,000 words into a fiction book about Jackdaws. I’ve spent years observing them in our neighbourhood 🙂

I love an opportunistic Maggie!! 😜
