Welcome to another month!
I can’t believe how fast this past month has gone. It seems to have flown by!
At the end of October, I decided to put some serious effort into my writing. I’ve been posting on Instagram for several years and needed a change. I want to develop my writing and had discovered Medium via another writer on Instagram at the start of the year.
I decided that instead of doing NaNoWriMo, a month-long writing challenge where you end up with a draft novel at the end, I would focus on myself as a writer in a different way and go “all in” on Medium, but also build my writing world. I wrote about it on Medium, called My November Writing Experiment.
In the past month, I have really grown as a writer! I have posted 54 different stories (a mix of poems, reflective pieces, and satire and comedy). I have built networks, having almost daily contact with some people, and they’re spread out all over the globe.
In the past week and a bit I’ve written the following:
SATIRE/HUMOUR
How to Decode Your Child’s School Report on MuddyUm (satire!)
Mother Investigated After Child’s Tablet and Phone Ban for MAP on MuddyUm (satire, again! But in news form, because the clever people at MuddyUm decided to have a MuddyUm Associated Press Newsgathering service!)
How To Wake Up Almost Before You Go to Sleep, inspired by another post, heavy on the satire, questioning why anyone in their right mind would actually get up at 5am)
Mother Receives 2 Seconds of Teen’s Gratitude
Plumbers Are Us, about Medium’s email sent out that told everyone they couldn’t recycle their stories! Oh, wonderful day!
My Funny Button Is Stuck On, is about my surprise at being able to write funny things. Once you start seeing the world through humour goggles it’s really hard to stop!
LIFE/REFLECTIONS
Walking In The Footsteps Of Others is a photostory in response to a challenge by Medium Publication, SNAPSHOTS. I wrote about Cornwall, a most beautiful and magical part of the planet, with photos as the main focus.
I wrote about How I Accidentally Became Multi-Lingual. Because I never set out to be, it kind of just happened!
For The Love Of A Ship briefly tells about my love for the old sailing ship Pommern, which I have the great fortune to be able to work on.
POETRY
one of my poems has been put to music by a friend - that was exciting!
I even started my own publication on Medium, kind of like a little magazine, where I can showcase work that I haven’t published through another Medium publication, and where I can write about beer! Stay tuned for that!
So there you have it!
A pretty intense month and certainly a productive last 10 days or so. I am enjoying this writing process. I am enjoying spreading my writing wings and trying new forms. The best thing is making great connections with others! I have barely noticed the weather turning and getting more chilly. Or that I have had two ‘real paying jobs’ this whole time…
I hope you have had a great November and are looking forward to the festivities that December brings. Me?! I’m off to Australia in a week!
~thanks for reading!~
